In the summer of 2016, I interned at The Stirling Smith Art Gallery and Museum, this is where I was first introduced to the processes of 3D scanning and modelling. Therefore, I decided to create a 3D scan of an artefact from the museum’s collections for the exhibition. I went with a cream jug which represents the history of the Kippen Vine in the Stirling area. To create the 3D scan I used a method called photogrammetry. The process involves stitching together several overlapped 2D images in the relevant software to produce the 3D model. The next stage was to clean up the model using an editing programme to successfully 3D print the artefact. The jug was then 3D printed in Full colour sandstone and rubber-like black dye and suspended from a steel frame.
Due to 3D printing, the once museum artefact now becomes a sculptural object. The presentation is also crucial when displaying the pieces hence my non-conventional museum-style curation.
