Remnants

Remnants with George Logan, Northlight Gallery, Stromness.
23rd July – 10th August 2022

Remnants ~ That which is left and remains; in this exhibition the theme acts as the basis for artists George Logan and Alice Martin to recreate, document and imagine. Using a variety of media to wonder and recontextualize remnants of the past, objects, places and cultures. Finding and retracing back to a possible whole but also reworking to reveal new and alternative perspectives.

George works with the medium of photography, frequently in combination with text. His personal work is heritage based in particular of the 18th century, the era of ‘improvements’, enterprise and adventure. Photographically his work encompasses a more formal documentary approach. Recent endeavours include the book form, removing reliance on exhibiting.

Alice makes 3D printed sculptures and 2D imagery, integrating colour and texture that builds upon and informs the base sculpture. Her base cultural forms come from public and individual collections of historic artefacts. Periods of interest range from the Renaissance back to the prehistoric. For Remnants Alice has altered the display of several older works including a selection that was ‘Commissioned by Look Again 2020 supported by The Robert Gordon University’. To go alongside this is new pieces, supported by Hope Scott Trust, that explore the imitation of materials through process and painted elements.
